The Crosscurrents Conference considered the importance of ongoing dialogue in the 20th century; let us follow the example of the conference topic and see where a discourse in cyberspace might lead.

We propose two initial queries to prompt discussion:
--A lot of the papers discussed composers' travels and projects organized by individuals. How does this power of the individual at home translate to new contexts?
--what has the role of "crosscurrents" from other continents has been in the last century, and how are they emerging as creative forces in the 21st century?

Your own threads and thoughts are also welcome!

Introducing the Blog

Hello Crosscurrentlers!

A few quick notes about this blog. Since Cambridge and Munich are separated not only by an ocean, but also six months, we hope that this very informal forum will provide participants a chance to continue discussions, recast questions to all of the presenters and organizes, and initiate new challenges as we look forward to 1950-2000. We -- graduate students Andrea, Elizabeth, and Glenda -- will be organizing bi-weekly posts and are more than happy to take suggestions. In fact, we'd like to make clear from the start that we solicit any thoughts from you.

To start off, perhaps we can return to the conference's beginning and the place of "popular culture" in the study of European and American interaction. What is the location of the popular in the geography of this conference's discussions and discussants ?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

A practical post-script: If your are hesitant to post in this public space, perhaps we can encourage to follow our lead: we'll be using only our first names, so that writing in this space feels less like publishing and more like chatting. Wir laden Ihnen auch ein, auf Deutsch zu schreiben!

Welcome to the Crosscurrents Blog

This blog is for continuing the conversation started in Cambridge two weeks ago at the Harvard part of the international conference "Crosscurrents: American and European Music in Interaction, 1900-2000."
